Algarve Tours
Silves & Wine
Before the visit to Silves, be surprised by a pearl placed in a rocky spot over the sea: Senhora Da Rocha Chapel on top of a cliff. Further north, the historic and charming city of Silves with its heritage, colours, its inhabitants and way of life will amaze you. Land of Muslim princes and princesses, knights and ancient legends, get carried away by this enchanted region. Silves is a historic and delightful town, which was originally the ancient Moorish capital of the Algarve. Under the Moors (between the 9 th and the 12th century), Silves was a major defensive stronghold and important trading centre, with boats sailing down the Arade River and crossing to North Africa. Silves is known for its red castle (red sandstone blocks and taipa), and its Cathedral. A fascinating and unforgettable tour through the past, gastronomy and people of Silves. The tour will end in a winery and you will experience a local wine tasting.

- Our tour in Silves begins at the Roman Bridge where you will have a view from Silves on the south bank of the River Arade.
- Continuing the tour we will visit the Castle of Silves classified as a National Monument in 1910. Built on top of a hill, the imposing Silves Castle is Roman in origin, but it was the Arabs who built the magnificent castle we see today, between the 8th and 13th centuries. The Cathedral and the Municipal Museum can be visited but always taking into account the wine tasting that is scheduled. Silves Cathedral was built in the 13th century on the site of the Moorish Grand Mosque.
- Guided walk through Silves streets. The streets near the River are flat, with long rides and gardens. In the centre of the town towards the Castle, the streets go up through the old town, with access to stairs and traditional stone sidewalk. Enjoy the details of the local houses with their varied styles.
- Brief stop at Café da Rosa (at the arcades under the Town Hall), for tea or coffee.
- We will end the tour with an unforgettable tasting of local wines at one of the region´s winery.
